The Cheruthoni dam near the Idukki Arch Dam is the largest concrete gravity dam in Kerala, at 138m. The Kerala State Electricity Board, which also oversees the dam, provides a two-hour cruise between Kulamavu and Idukki. The captivating view of the sunrise and sunset from here is the highlight. On a clear day, even a part of Kochi city can be seen from Cheruthoni dam. The dam, however, can only be reached on foot or by jeep.
The Cheruthoni dam and two other dams at Idukki and Kulamavu were built as a part of the Idukki Hydroelectric Project. It also supplies electricity to several villages nearby. At the Cheruthoni dam, visitors are greeted by a sweeping view of the area which includes the alluring Cheruthoni river and the hills around. Don't pass up the opportunity to see Kerala's largest and tallest gravity dam in all its magnificence if you are coming to Idukki.
